What is Ziana?

Ziana is a medication used for the treatment of acne. This unique formula is a blend of two other acne medications: tretinoin and clindamycin. How do I use Ziana?

Ziana gel is applied once a day to the affected area. The medication is best applied just before bedtime. Wash the face with warm water and a mild detergent or soap. Pat the skin dry. Then apply a very light film of the medication on the acne lesion. Gently massage the medication in circles with 2-3 light strokes. If you prefer, you may use a Q-tip. Wash your hands before and after application. There is no need to cover the area with any garment or bandage. After application of the gel, do not wash the face for the next 3-4 hours.

What are side effects of Ziana?

In general, this is a relatively safe medication. However, when initially applying Ziana gel, you may develop the following side effects: mild skin irritation, dryness of skin, peeling of skin, redness, and itching. These side effects are usually due to the peeling actions of tretinoin and last only a few days. If the side effects are mild to moderate, one can apply a moisturizer at the same time. In some cases, you may need to decrease the dose or apply it every other day.

Are there any precautions I should take when using Ziana?
  1. You have to be careful and not let the medication get into the eyes, nose or mouth. If for some reason, the medication does get into your eyes or mouth, rinse thoroughly with running water for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Never apply Ziana gel on skin that is broken, dry, ulcerated or cut.
  3. Clindamycin is an antibiotic and in some people trace amount of the drug may be absorbed into the body and cause diarrhea.
  4. Tretinoin can make the skin sensitive to sunlight. Thus, if you go out, you must cover the body with a long sleeved garment, wear a sunscreen, avoid sun-tanning and use of sunlamps. If not, then it can result in a sunburn like effect.
  5. Do not apply any other skin cream, lotion or gel on the face for at least one hour before using Ziana.
  6. After application, avoid applying any skin care products for the next 2 hours.
  7. Tretinoin can make your skin weather sensitive so you will need to protect it from extremes of temperature such as wind, cold and heat.
Who should not use Ziana?

Because Ziana gel contains clindamycin, it is important that people with inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis not use the medication. In addition, individuals with an inflammatory condition of the intestine known as colitis should not use this medication. The reason is that clindamycin can worsen the diarrhea.

Can Ziana be combined with other acne medications?

In general, you should not combine medications to treat the same disorder. If you are on erythromycin for your acne, you should not combine it with Ziana. Using multiple medications to treat the same disorder usually increases the risk of side effects.

Can Ziana cause allergies?

Like any medication, there is a risk of allergy with Ziana. If you develop a skin rash, difficulty breathing, swelling around the face and lips and chest pain, seek immediate medical attention. In this case, the risk of allergic reaction is quite low.
